Thankful Thursday – Happy Thanksgiving Day

I am thankful for:

The National Holiday of Thanksgiving – (My favorite Holiday!)

Many Americans will seek sustenance in Thanksgiving, a day “set apart” by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863, in the midst of the Civil War.

“The year that is drawing towards its close, has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies,” Lincoln announced in a proclamation issued Oct. 3. “To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature, that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of Almighty God.”

EVERYTHING He has given me richly to enjoy!  . “Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not high-minded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the Living God, Who giveth us richly all things to enjoy.” 1 Timothy 6:17  Oh, the riches we have in Christ Jesus!

All the blessings we have in Christ
  • being chosen in eternity past
  • being adopted as His child
  • being accepted in Christ
  • being forgiven of my trespasses
  • being sealed with the Holy Spirit
  • being part of a great eternal plan
  • being renewed by His Spirit
  • being a Holy habitation of God
  • being quickened and made alive
  • being helped in my weakness
  • being able to bear fruit
  • being quicken and made alive
  • being able to have the capacity to know spiritual things
  • being raised to a new sphere of life
  • being able to receive what I ask for in Jesus’ name (according to His will)
  • being made an inheritor the the kingdom

so, so many more!

Spiritual Sundays – Are We Galatians 6:10 People?

Are we Galatians 6: 10 people?

How very thankful we are for the blessing of Galatians 6:10 people in our lives.  I often wonder if the Lord doesn’t allow us to be in a position of pure helplessness, so another can come along beside us and be a help to us.  It is truly wonderful to be apart of a loving, caring community!  How true it is that people need people, and that people need to help people.  If you are like me, you find it much easier to be helping others than to have someone serving you.  I find such pleasure in knowing that I have been a help to others.  But do we rob others of blessings when we are so self-sufficient, thinking we do not need the help of others? There needs to be that balance of giving and receiving, blessing and being blessed.  God has placed us in our church families for a reason…to be a help and blessing to one another.   We share with other Christians so that all of us might be able to share with a needy world.  We, in the household of faith, are receivers that become transmitters.  As we abound in love for one another, we overflow in love for all men (1 Thes. 3:12.)

So let us each, as we have opportunity, do good to those in our realm of influence…our families, our neighborhood, our friends, those at work and at school, and especially those of like faith.  May our song be, “Make me a blessing, make me a blessing to someone today!”

Thankful Thursday – November 15, 2018

I am so thankful for:

The beauty of God’s Creation!  Spectacular!  Light, darkness, the universe with its Sun, Moon, stars  and planets, fauna and flora, dry land and sea, and  man created of the dust of the earth and woman, fashioned from the rib of man.  (Interesting that man was created and we, as women, were fashioned!)  God is such an amazing Creator!

Having daily physical needs met…food, shelter, and clothing, all provisions from the hand of God.  How very grateful I am that God sees my needs and provides so that I can focus on His Kingdom work.  “Seek ye first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you.”  Matthew 6:33

Spiritual Sundays – Growing Older

images (3)

I have been thinking lots lately about grumpy old people, perhaps because they seem to be everywhere.  They’re fussing at the waitress in the restaurant, scolding the clerk at the grocery store for an out-of-stock item (like it’s her fault), lacing out a friend because he neglected something he wasn’t aware of, and just being fussy, fussy, fussy!

A while back when I was at the grocery store an elderly man literally screamed at me and told me to get away from him when I reached to get a package of cheese.  I tried to apologize for being near his space and he just kept screaming at me.  Nearly scared me to death, and believe me, I did quickly move away.  As I continued to shop, I could not help but wonder what might be going on in that person’s life to make him act so cantankerous.  I ushered up a quick prayer asking the Lord to surround him with His love and comfort.

I certainly do know that growing older is not easy, and  I am well aware of the aches and pains of aging, the mourning over things we used to be able to do and can’t any more, forgetfulness and declining health issues.  But this IS the physical winding down process as described in Ecclesiastes, chapter 12…with the fading mental powers, the knees buckling, the sound of the grinding of the teeth is low, eyesight fading, easily being awakened from sleep, deafness, white hair, heart and circulation problems, and fear of old age!  Yes, it comes to everyone!  As King Solomon ends his discourse on the ‘Vanity of Life”, he concludes that God is the Secret to Life!  Verse 13 and 14 state, “The conclusion, when all has been heard, is fear (reverence) God and keep His commandments, because this applies to every person.  For God will bring every act to judgment, everything which is hidden, whether it is good or evil.”

My heart’s desire is not to become a fussy, grumpy old woman, but to have a desire to grow up into a new season of fruifulness.  How thankful I am for this season in life which allows me to have more time to study God’s Word, more time to meditate and pray, more time to serve Him,  more time to read, and more time to share with others. May God give me the grace as I age to still bear fruit and to be fat and flourishing.

"The righteous shall flourish like a palm tree,
He shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon.
Those who are planted in the house of the LORD
Shall flourish in the courts of our God.
   They shall still bear fruit in old age;
They shall be fat and flourishing,
   To shew that the LORD is upright;
He is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in Him."

It almost sounds too simple to feel important, but understanding the power of gratitude can change your life forever. Sarah Breathnach said it best…

“When we choose not to focus on what is missing from our lives but are grateful for the abundance that’s present…we experience
heaven on earth.”

Family in NY 2015.jpgMy family – What a genuine blessing they are.  Even though we may be miles apart scattered all over this country, we still get keep up with one another via social media.  How wonderful it is to be able to keep in touch, and to share our lives heart to heart…to watch the children grow, to be available for needful prayer, to encourage and uplift one another, to share our love one for other, and to let each other know what very much we miss each other.  Distance cannot separate the love that we have for one another. Family is everything!

Wonderful Friends…so many people who are so dear to our hearts… Old Friends, New Friends, Near Friends, Friends across the miles,  and the Friend we have in Jesus.

How poor our lives would be without the treasured friends given to us.  So thankful for how they each enrich our lives.

How we thank God for this provision in our lives.

r –  I love to laugh!   How fun it is when we gather with friends or family and have a session of good ole belly laughs.   How thankful I am for a husband who has such a great sense of humor and who keeps me laughing on a daily basis.   Often life becomes way too serious.  Laughter does lighten the spirit and is such good medicine!

downloadEncouraging People with well-timed words. Words can encourage, discourage, or do nothing.  Shallow words do little, death words discourage, and life words encourage.  I am so thankful for those who have spoken sincerely with words that have had a positive impact on my life.  I love “Balcony people,” ones who lift you up not bring you down.   I want to strive to be more like them…I’m learning!

images (2)The joy of serving others.  How wonderful it is to be of help to someone in need, to help lighten their load.  I want to be:

A listening ear
A sincere compliment giver
A card/note sender or gift giver for any occasion
A needed car driver
A food provider for an ill, widowed or aged person
A financial helper
A hug giver
A pay-it-forward person
A pray-er for people’s heart-felt needs
A server in my local church where ever the need
A missionary supporter

The best feeling of happiness is when you’re happy  because you’ve made somebody else happy.  May my desire always be, “Make me a blessing to someone today.”

Have a Blessed Day,

Spiritual Sundays – Cultivating Quiet Time

2011-07-02 (2)My Sanctuary
I love my quiet, private place to be alone, a place to draw apart so I do not fall apart.  Nestled in a cozy spot in our guest room, it is my set apart place to meet with God.   It is filled with the things I love:  photos of my family and friends, my organizational/devotional journal, my Bible, my favorite tea cup, a candle, worship music, a hymnal, and pens and pencils.

Things I love to do in my quite place:

  • Be still and know He is God (this can be transforming)
  • Write my daily “To Do” list on index card (get that over & off my mind)
  • Journalize what I did yesterday (on daily devotional sheet) “Redeeming the Time”
  • Read Jill Brisco’s “Lord I have shut the door” poem (below)
  • Study my Bible and pray
  • Sing praise songs
  • Listen to beautiful classical music
  • Read poetry
  • Make a list of the things I love
  • Make a list of things for which I am thankful
  • Write my pressing issues & concerns on small pieces of paper and drop them into my alter jar symbolically turning them over to God
  • Send a greeting card or a note of encouragement or thanks
  • Reflect on where I am spiritually, physically and emotionally
  • Enjoy a hot cup of coffee or a spot of tea
Lord I Have Shut the Door
by Jill Brisco
Lord, I have shut the door, speak now the word
Which in din and throng could not be heard;
Hushed now my inner heart, whisper Thy will
While I have come apart, while all is still.
Lord, I have shut the door, here I bow,
Speak for my soul attend turns to Thee now.
Rebuke Thou what is vain, counsel my soul.
Thy holy will reveal, my will control.
Lord, I have shut the door, strengthen my heart;
Yonder awaits the task I share apart.
Only through grace bestowed may I be true.

Here while alone with Thee my strength renew.
